it has the most tired feet
on earth, the man had said
while the three of them carried on
the hydrangeas: sitting on its back
the child looked at the donkey and
at life unravelling at each bend in the road
like a sepia photograph from which
one never comes back. a very long
time afterwards, on the same road,
she saw the man on his own, no donkey
no flowers, and recognised in herself
the immense tiredness of the world.

tem os pés mais cansados
do mundo, dissera-lhe o homem
enquanto seguiam os três com
as hortênsias: a criança sentada
sobre o dorso olhava o burro e
a vida que se abria em cada curva
como uma fotografia a sépia
de que nunca se regressa. muito
tempo depois, na mesma estrada,
viu o homem sozinho, sem o burro
nem as flores, e reconheceu em si
o imenso cansaço do mundo.
